Grace To The Grace Killers

It’s been brought to our attention that Westboro Baptist Church plans to picket Cross Point this coming weekend. Here’s a short video to explain to those of you who attend Cross Point how we think we should respond.

Love you guys. Hope this won’t be too big of an inconvenience to you this Sunday and I’m deeply sorry you have to be exposed to their hate filled messages.

  1. Valerie says:

Praying for you and your flock this weekend!

  2. I am so proud to go to a Church that challenges us to live out what we preach and love the unlovable.

  3. Lori in Colorado (Struggles with same sex attraction) says:

I will be praying. You are an inspiration!

    • Baird says:

What a shame that you have made to feel you have to struggle with same sex attraction. There’s nothing wrong with it and you have nothing to struggle with.

      • Johnny says:

Jesus did die for all sins but we shouldn’t keep living in them. God made Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve. we all sin and fall short but we should strive to live a godly life.

  4. Hilary says:

Thank you for being the first to show grace. You’re a great example to follow!

  5. Whitney says:

They tried coming to College Station to protest the funeral of a fallen Aggie soldier. I have never been more proud of living in this town! The ways proceeded to create a “Maroon Wall” and blocked off the perimeter of the entire church where the funeral was being held. Westboro never made an appearance. Here’s the article: http://www.theeagle.com/article/20120706/BC0101/120709736/1006/BC0103&slId=2

  6. Andy Weeks says:

I hope that if they do show, that the grace shown to them will heap burning coals upon their heads. Maybe some will repent down the road by the actions shown by Cross Point. Kill ‘em with grace everyone!!!

  7. Mychelle MacKay says:

Pete: Thank you for the notice that we may have wounded souls outside our building as well as inside this weekend. I appreciate your message of forgiveness for those who may tresspass against us. I absolutely love and admire the way our church puts its actions before words. I have never been a part of a body that truly lives to make a positive difference in the lives of others, rather than just talking about it. This weekend will just be one more way that we can show we are true followers of Christ. I hope this sad, sad group will someday find peace.

  8. Frank says:

Well, said and a great response to an attack that would seem to come from within the Church.

Certainly will be praying for Crosspoint, and for Westboro.

  9. Wanda says:

Praying that God will keep them from your church and protect you. Will be remembering you and your congregation this weekend.

  10. Wow, picketers or not.. that is just a really powerful message all the way around. I’ve shared it!

  11. Jason Hayes says:

Grateful for your example and leadership in this, Pete. God is honored by your love for all people. Love you, bro. Praying that God does something huge THIS WEEKEND at Cross Point.

  12. Ashley Smith says:

    Return love for hate.
    Thank you for your example.
    Thank you for living grace.

  13. Aaron says:

So well said Pete. Just love your heart and that of your church. Westboro threatened to protest at a local high school here in Hilliard, Ohio this past school year. They were actually only in Ohio because a local college invited them to a forum (which is beyond me why you would do). They threatened a protest since they were “in the neighborhood”. Thankfully the parents of this community created a barrier around the school to shelter the children and honestly, only a few of the people from Westboro showed up. It ended up being much ado about nothing. Praying for Cross Point this weekend. Praying for Westboro. May this be an opportunity to shower them with grace. Love you guys.

  14. Vicki says:

i love you, pete wilson!! love your grace filled self and who Jesus is through you! praying for you guys! pretty sure we will not have anyone doing that with your team in the Dominican at Brisas! much love and peace to you and the family!!!

  15. Buddy Knight says:

Pete: Praying for you and your flock this weekend. So many people have such a difficult time hating sin but loving sinners as Christ did: Enough to die for them. It’s like hating POWs because they are in Hitler’s custody.

Go in power and victory, Pete, and may His angels guard you all this weekend!

  16. Grace wins.

Thanks for living out the Gospel.

  17. heidi says:

Praying for congregation, teams as you move forward this weekend to serve, restore, and celebrate the lives of people…

  18. So proud of you guys! Hold your heads high. Love them like Jesus would. Praying for you all!

  19. Karl Dumas says:

I love the way you put it in to perspective. Prayers from the mission field of UTAH, where we’re learning how to love people into the kingdom, rather than try to beat them into it.

  20. Well said Pete and what a great example to those who come on a regular basis to CP to see you and others fleshing out your (His) message of grace. You will be covered in prayer this weekend.

  21. Stephanie says:

Praying for you and them – maybe you should do what Mark Driscoll’s church did and offer them coffee and donuts : )

  22. ShirleydeGraffenreid says:

We will be praying!! We are members of Grace Community Church. (Pete we are Jennifer deG Wheeler’s parents) Paul and Shirley deGraffenreid

  23. Jen says:

Pete, I’ve been following your blog for a few years now and can’t imagine why anyone would picket you and your church – regardless of the reason! I will pray for you, your members and Westboro Baptist Church this weekend.

  24. Kristi says:

    Pete,
You are 100% correct when you say all they want is attention and reaction. I am blessed with the opportunity to love my enemy almost daily, as I drive the streets in our hometown of Topeka, KS. I remember a couple of years ago when you preached on preparing for your first visit from FRED and his team and God convicting you of giving grace to grace killers. This message really convicted me too, I know they no showed at Cross Point the last time they were in the area but since hearing this message I’ve had the opportunity to offer the younger members bottled water on really hot days. Simply reminding them that God loves everyone and we are sinners in need of a savior.
I will be praying for all you over the weekend!

  25. Amy Duncan says:

This is why I love going to CrossPoint and really believe in the vision. Like you always say we are broken and need forgiveness everyday. If they understood anything about Jesus and his sacrifice on the cross, they would be joining us at CrossPoint instead of picketing !!

  26. JR Edens says:

My brother was killed in Afghanistan 2 and a half months ago and this group of people tried to protest my brother’s funeral. They are insane and I don’t understand their methods!!

    • Pete Wilson says:

      So sorry to hear that.

    • Jenn W. says:

These people are just full of hatred. Misery loves company. Satan is doing what he wants through these individuals. Sometimes I wish GOD would give me the grace that he gave when he sent his son down to earth . I wish the grace would ne like when Jesus told the devil to come out of that man. I would do it to all them. Praying hard for my church this weekend. Pete, I will definately walk proud through those doors on Sunday, and pray for them as I am making it to my seat to hear lhe message of peace, grace, and love.

  27. lauren says:

I have friends that attend your church so I learned about this from them. I’ll be praying for you and for your congregation! This is a beautiful video and fantastic message whether they ever show up or not. Thank you so much for your witness and exhortation!

  28. Ben says:

“As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.” Romans 9:13. I wonder when the last time it was that Pete preached on that verse? Jesus preached more about hell than any other preacher in the Bible. Has Pete ever preached about it?

  29. Pete, such wisdom and charity in your response and instructions to your church. Thank you for being who God wants you to be in all of it. I pray for you and Crosspoint to ever be a deeper and wider pool of grace.

  30. Kerry Cox says:

What a blessing in disguise if they DO show up, because hopefully it will make it clear to everyone in Nashville and the surrounding area that if you think WBC is a little messed up, come and be a part of the people on the other side, the people of Cross Point Church, who believe in a God of unspeakable love. Way to go, Pete!

  31. Kristi Ottmar says:

thanks for the reminder…. “those that hurt are hurting”

  32. Brandee says:

This is why I am so glad to be part of this church. These people need Jesus and the message of grace. Prayers for Cross Point and for God to work in the hearts of the people of Westboro.

  33. @ThatGuyKC says:

I am humbled by your gracious response. WBC makes me so angry, but my reaction shouldn’t be in anger. Will be praying for y’all this weekend.

  34. Jonnelle says:

“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.” – Genesis 50:20

Praying for our church and the others they plan to picket, the Westboro Baptist folks, and the people who saw the news story who will come this weekend to see the hub-bub.

Praying that they will hear the true Gospel of Jesus Christ. Praying that Cross Point will continue to be open and full of love, grace, and truth.

  35. I apologise; the video doesn’t play on my iPhone so I don’t have your response to provide further context.

I’d just say that it is best we all remember that it is only through redemption that we can be a picture of Grace. Without that redemption we are nothing.

All of this “you sure showed them some GRACE!!!!” stuff smacks of speaking the old Man’s language in the new Man’s tongue.

Without Christ we ARE WBC. No different. Glory to Christ, Grace in the Spirit.

  36. Excellent response. Prayers extended your way.

  37. Linda Bradley says:

I wonder if we should give them water and something to eat.

  38. Sharon McCormack says:

My prayers are with you and your flock.

  39. Tessa says:

I will be praying that you are blessed by their absence!

  40. Tony Moore says:

Pete, we love you and your church and are so thankful for the clear picture of Jesus that you protray to our broken world. May you walk in deep grace this weekend.

  41. Bruce and Laura (Faith Promise) says:

Praying for you this weekend. I commend you for your
grace under fire. It is easy to be grace-filled when
not challenged, but difficult to display in the heat
of battle. You have been a great friend and
    inspiration to us. God Bless.

  42. Tom Tyndall says:

Pastor-to-pastor: you model well the way to speak truth in love as well as to shepherd the folks who wonder how you are to react. Thank you for calm guidance, grace and offering hope to we who love Jesus and want to show the love of His House to others.

  43. Chuck Long says:

Very wise and compassionate words Pete! If more people could learn to engage others the way you’re asking them to, the world would be a much better place!

  44. Pam McAbee says:

Will be praying for y’all, for the unbelievers that could be affected and for WBC. God bless you.

  45. Beverly Stroud says:

Sorry we will be out of town this week end and won’t be able to share a smile and Gods love with our visitors. Will keep you and Crosspoint in our prayers

  46. Candy says:

I’m praying for you and will pass this on to our staff and others.

    Blessings,
    Candy

  47. Karin says:

Pete, will be praying for you and Cross Point this weekend. Show them Grace. Love what you do in Nashville

  48. i’m going to pray now. and as it crosses my mind over the next few days.

this response gets me so excited because this is exactly the kind of thing that points people to Christ. this is why i love my crosspoint friends so much… and what you are doing at your church. it’s an honor to serve in this city together.

  49. Natasha says:

Beautifully, beautifully said. Praying for you guys! We had a similar experience (in our tiny Oklahoma town) after a Marine’s death. They showed up, and because of the overwhelming support of our community, promptly left. Wishing the same for you. <3

  50. Marilyn villante says:

God Bless you for reminding us that Jesus is Love. I can never understand the hate in the name of Christ.

  51. Rekni & Chris says:

We will keep you and your congregation in our prayers.

  52. Missy says:

Such an awesome message, Pete. This just solidifies our decision to be a part of Cross Point. And I’m going to guess most folks would be more attracted to a church that WBC hates. ;)

  53. Hashman says:

Westboro is a church, like Churches Chicken is a church. #not

  54. Brothers & Sisters in Christ: I must say, as a gay man who absolutely believes in Christ and leads my life as many of you do, one with God and one filled with Grace, I pray for all of your church members this weekend. Your pastor’s video message gave tears to my eyes – I see true love and true compassion for all human beings.

Westboro’s #1 hate mission is against people like me, people who are gay. Regardless of your religious upbringing (and I don’t know your church nor do I know Pastor Pete) I humbly ask this: OPEN your hearts to Jesus’ word and just know there are so many people like me, who truly never made a choice to be gay, who have wonderful families and who LOVE JESUS as much as you, and all we ask and pray is that a church will accept us. That people won’t judge us for who we love, just like how you have no choice in who you love. We love, like you. We hurt, like you. We’re happy, like you. We sin, like you – but who I am as a gay person IS who God created me as. I am not a sinner because I am gay. I seek his Grace just like you all would. That said, THANK YOU FOR STANDING UP TO HATE.

Regardless how you may feel about me being gay, those of you who can walk in love like our Savior did are truly people I am happy to call my brothers and sisters. GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU AND PASTOR PETE’S CHURCH!! I pray for blessings to flow for your congregation this weekend. Hate will never win.

    Sincerely… in His Name,
    Jeff

  55. Emily Rowe says:

“Everybody is welcome, because nobody is perfect, but anything is possible!” You’re amazing Pete Wilson!

  56. Hans says:

Dear Pastor Pete and all the folks at Cross Point. I’m sorry.

WBC has crafted a message which is offensive to all. Funded by court settlements from numerous discrimination lawsuits (aided by the ACLU http://www.aclu.org/blog/free-speech-lgbt-rights/why-fred-phelpss-free-speech-rights-should-matter-us-all) they travel the globe spewing their empty hate-filled rhetoric. It’s a bunco game; Shirley Phelps Roper is on record in being in favor of equal marriage. http://feastoffun.com/podcast/2011/02/25/fof-1335-the-westboro-baptist-church-vs-anonymous/ I’m sorry you’re their victim-of-the-moment.

What I do know is God loves these folks just as much as He loves me.

  57. Vikingwarbrides says:

I want to thank you for being an “inclusive” and not “exclusive” church. Too many of my brethren have abandoned Jesus Christ and the church due to the misrepresentation of the scripture and the use of that scripture to punish and malign the LGBTQ community.

I want to pass on something that some groups have done when WBC comes to town. Some have used the opportunity to collect funds for a charity. Basically if you hate WBC, give us a dollar for a non profit organization. So that their hate can be turned to good.

Again thank you and my thoughts are with you this weekend.

  58. Mary says:

I remember seeing about the “Maroon Wall” for the solider that was killed in my home state by the other solider for stealing the tool box and while reading the article they never showed up

I DO NOT know that they will be “talking the talk” in other words still come to Nashville and protest Cross Point

I think what they are doing is really inappropriate because IF someone would do the same thing at their “church” they would be on the news faster than a flea jumping on a dog

  59. Elizabeth says:

They picketed 2 of my church’s 4 campuses last year as well as others in Savannah. Will keep you guys in my prayers this weekend.

  60. Amy Nabors says:

Thank you for this amazing example of grace, Pete. Matthew Barnett from the LA Dream Center spoke at Church of the Highlands this past Sunday. In his message he said “A church changes things when they are known for what they are for. Not for what they are against.” Crosspoint is such a great example of this and that’s why it is changing lives. Praying for you all this weekend and praying they don’t even show up.

  61. Jim Higgins says:

Praying for a revival in the heart’s of WBC. Sounds like a daunting task BUT our God is good and faithful.

2 Thessalonians 3:5 ~ And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patients of Christ.

  62. Carl Adams says:

I appreciate how you’re encouraging your congregation to respond biblically, Pete. Inspiring! Calls us all to remember how easy it is to respond to hate with anger and hate ourselves, and how crucifying our flesh and allowing His spirit to move us in response, in LOVE, is the Way we’re called to follow! Praying for your church this weekend!

  63. Beth Coulton says:

Beautiful, heartfelt message from you, Pete. I’m in PA so have not had the chance to attend Cross Point, but I hope to be there one of these days! Will be praying for y’all this weekend…..

  64. Jon says:

Pete: Praying for you, the leadership and people of crosspoint. may the Love of Jesus shine through…

  65. Joe Pote says:

    Wow! That is awesome!

When legalists feel that need to persecute you for sharing the message of God’s grace, you know you must be doing something right!

“Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” (Matthew 5:11-12

    Blessings to you!

  66. Michael Boggs says:

Love this Pete. Kairos has always been blessed by your leadership in our community and we continue to be with this video. Thanks for showing kindness and love in the face of persecution and hate.

  67. Jan Greggo says:

Love you Pete and praying for you guys.

  68. Cheryl says:

I just wanted you to know that I am Baptist but I do not approve of what Westboro Baptist Church is doing. I do however want to thank you and your church for being so gracious and loving in response to this craziness. May the Lord continue to bless you and your ministry as you reach the lost and dying world with the love of our Savior Jesus Christ who died for all sinners. May you continue to witness to and serve those who others want to shun and throw away because they are not like the rest of us.

    • Sarah S. says:

Cheryl, I pray that NO ONE assumes that all Baptists align themselves with WBC– in the same way that I pray that NO ONE assumes that all Christians align themselves with WBC. Praying for grace for all.

  69. Pete,

Isn’t it interesting how many times the enemy works through the actions of religious people? It is unfortunate that so many people substitute a relationship with an organization for authentic faith in God. I appreciate your God-centered response to the situation and your unflinching commitment to lead a church that lives out the truths of God’s Word.

  70. Melinda says:

Pete (and Cross Point Nashville family), many in your Oregon church family are joining you in praying for His goodness, His grace, His revelation to be apparent.

  71. Missy Bush says:

My husband and I visited with our daughter, Helen, two different Sundays and we saw at those services and through this communication why she loves this church. We live in Louisville and go to a more traditional church. It is this kind of thinking and love for each other that will bring us all together and it is all about love and acceptance.

  72. Sarah S. says:

Thank you so much for this — which is nothing less than I would expect. And I appreciate the reminder. Years ago I committed to pray regularly for Fred Phelps and his family, something I have failed to uphold. I will renew my commitment to that, starting by joining you all in prayer for this weekend. My God’s grace and peace reign this weekend.

  73. BeccyH says:

I lift my hands to our Father and ask that His grace and blessings be upon you.

  74. Janet says:

Pastor Pete, I will be praying for Y’all.I love how you say grace for the grace killers. What would we do without grace? Blessings! Janet

  75. LaVona McKendree says:

I believe that they should show so they will be able to actually find out what Gods presents actually feels like. When I lived in Nashville and attended Crosspoint with my children the moment you walk in the door Gods presents is so.strong and amazing its wonderful. Pastor Pete I truly wish more pastors were as anointed as you are. We wish we could find a church like crosspoint here at Ft. Benning

  76. Carolyn says:

Wise word Pastor Pete. Love Crosspoint’s style.

  77. “Show grace to the grace killers”.

This is one of the reasons that I have highly respected everything I have read or listened to from you. Thank you for leading your church and many others in this way. Will be praying for all of you this weekend.

  78. Kara Kinnaird says:

    Cross Point and Pastor Wilson,
I just wanted you to know that you’ve got prayers going up for you in Birmingham, Alabama. I’ve had the pleasure of visiting with you with a friend of mine who is a member. I pray that God will give each of you the wisdom and courage you need to stand for what is good and right and love those who persecute you. May God bless you this weekend and may you be the example God needs to show this world His Love.

  79. NC Narrator says:

I’ll be praying for your church AND for WBC. They came to Laramie, WY during the trial of the two men who murdered Matthew Shepherd, which happened just before we moved to North Carolina. A friend of Matthew’s created a wall of angels – people in white robes wearing VERY tall wings – and surrounded the church members so that Matthew’s family wouldn’t be subjected to their hate. The members left after one day and did not return. Drown them in waves of grace; it’s the one thing they have no response for, as it’s something they don’t choose to embrace.

  80. Eileen says:

“It’s okay to not be okay” AMEN!

  81. Tracy Emery says:

To our brothers and sisters in Christ, we are praying for you! The picketers are scheduled to be at 4 churches in our city of Manhattan, KS this Sunday, July 14th as well. Perhaps, since we’re closer to Topeka, they won’t have enough picketers to send any to Nashville! :)

    Praying!

  82. katdish says:

My pastor often says that the problem with rallying people behind a common enemy is that when that enemy is gone, you have to find another one. The list of people WBC considers enemies seems never ending, and I’m sorry they’ve focused on the good people of Crosspoint. But whether they come or not, you will all still being carrying on, and how you respond to them may cause many more people to walk across the line and choose Jesus. Praying for you all.

  83. Jessica Hirsch says:

Amen, Pete! Thank you for your ministry.

  84. Kathryn says:

Pete – if WBC is protesting your church, you guys must be doing something right.

  85. Margaret says:

Hope Sunday goes well–you guys will be in our prayers!

  86. Love this response Pete!

  87. Leanne says:

Do you really want to show them love and grace? Introduce yourselves, welcome them to your church, take them a cooler of cold water bottles. I live in Topeka, Kansas. I am aquainted with a few of these people. They are deeply wounded. They are living a legacy of extreme abuse and shame. Do something for them no one else has the guts to do. You won’t break them or change their minds in one dayL but maybe a scratch could be the entry point of God’s love. Like a virus. Plant a seed.

  88. You know you’re doing something right when…

  89. Lynn Smith says:

I know I need some work in the Grace deparment. But wouldn’t it be great if we all sang or hummed “Jesus loves the Little Children” as we crossed the picket line in to church!

  90. Sharon says:

Thank you for this thoughtful and inspiring message of how we should treat those who persecute us. God bless you and your flock.

  91. Lynna Clark says:

    Wise words! Thank you pastor!

  92. Rodney Swanson says:

Curious if they came or not? If they did how did it go?

  93. Tiffany says:

I want to applaud Pete and Crosspoint for how they handled this situation. Considering that Jesus gives grace and we are supposed to model Him, WB is missing the mark and hurting God’s Kingdom. I am SO proud to be part of the extended CP family….your ARC parents are PROUD of you!
